Evaluation of Educational Progress
2003-2004 School Year
Student: Jennifer Smith
Grade of Student: 5th Grade
Home Education Supervisor: Jane Smith
The Portfolio
“The portfolio shall consist of a
log, made contemporaneously with the instruction, which designates by title the
reading materials used, samples of any writings, worksheets, workbooks or
creative materials used or developed by the student.”
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have kept an
impressive portfolio, including a daily log which shows that Jennifer has been
receiving instruction in all of the subjects required by Sections 1327 and
1327.1 of the school code. The subjects covered include: English, mathematics,
world history, science, health, fire safety, home economics, music, art, and
physical education.
Educational Progress
After reviewing the portfolio and interviewing Jennifer,
I can verify that Jenny has shown sustained progress in the overall education
program.
Jennifer took the required standardized achievement test
this year, and her results were impressive. She scored well in all the areas,
but she received especially good scores in vocabulary, spelling, language, and
math applications.
In her English studies, Jennifer learned to recognize
demonstrative and interrogative pronouns, to compare adjectives and adverbs, to
use prepositional phrases as modifiers, and to recognize and diagram direct
objects, indirect objects, predicate nouns and predicate adjectives. Jennifer
has also written several compositions in which she shows amazing ability to
write a realistic dialogue.
Jennifer had some struggles with her decimals; but, with
one-on-one instruction from her mother, she was able to conquer this difficulty.
She also worked with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing simple and
complex fractions; geometry; English and metric measurements; and percentages.
Old world history studies included the history of the
Middle East, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Germany, Russia, India, Africa, and the
Orient. Jennifer enjoyed her history textbook very much, and she was able to
recount many interesting facts which she learned. Also included in her history
text was geography, and she was able to commit to memory the names of the seven
continents and oceans as well as the major rivers, mountains, seas, and lakes.
In the area of science, Jennifer displayed a lively
interest in her textbook where she learned about geology and the life, growth,
and structures of cells, plants, and animals.
Other minor courses covered include health and the study
of the body and necessary nutrients. She also received the required instruction
in fire safety. In home economics she
learned the arts of baking, crocheting, and sewing. Musical instruction
included piano and voice lessons. She was also involved in a handbell choir
which is actually a combination of physical education and music, as it combines
physical exercise and co-ordination with instruction in rhythm, note values,
and musical theory. Jennifer’s artwork included drawing, coloring, and taking
classes in pottery. Physical education
this year included riding bicycle and playing basketball, baseball, and
football.
Summary
After reviewing the portfolio and interviewing Jennifer,
I am able to certify that she is receiving an appropriate education.
“Appropriate education”
shall mean a program consisting of instruction in the required subjects for the
time required in this act and in which the student demonstrates sustained
progress in the overall program.” Section 1327.1(a)
